First-person shooters were once uncharted territory in mobile gaming. With the influx of better smartphone technology though, it’s a common genre today, and some developers have ported or created mobile versions of their games. Point Blank: Strike is one such title, and is derived from a popular South Korean FPS, Point Blank. In a nutshell, this title epitomizes how a mobile port should be done: it’s a fantastic casual shooter that can cater to all gamers of different skill levels. So, should you start playing it? Here’s what you need to know:
Point Blank: Strike is a rather simpler and dumbed-down version of the PC game. The downgrade doesn’t mean that it’s bad though: it does have all the needed elements to be a fun mobile FPS. It has all the classic maps, albeit smaller, and the number of players are limited to eight, meaning 4v4 battles will take place. Though it says it provides the full experience of Point Blank, it does not. However, it makes a good account of itself and is enjoyable to both gamers regardless if they played the PC version or not.
There are several game modes to give you variety and keep you busy. These include the classic Team Deathmatch, plant the bomb Demolition mode, and Emblem match. You can also practice alone or with other players against enemy AI to get used to the controls and hone your skills. Considering that there are countless players enjoying the game, matchmaking doesn’t take long as long as you have a good internet connection. The most you will wait is 30 seconds tops.
The controls are intuitive and easy to learn. A virtual joystick is on the left side of the screen, above it is the sprint button which lets you run faster. Meanwhile, the right bottom corner of the screen holds the jump button and reload. To aim, simply drag your finger on the right side of your device to direct your crosshairs to your target. Once it’s on an enemy, your gun will automatically start firing. Fortunately, there is an option to go manual if you want calculated shots, not just to spray bullets and pray.
You can change your weapons, like to your melee weapon and sidearm by tapping the designated button which is on the top right part of a page. There are several types of weapons in Point Blank: Strike. These range from assault rifles, submachine guns, pistols and of course, the sniper rifles. You can also use grenades to smoke out enemies hiding behind obstacles.
In terms of stability, Point Blank: Strike performs well as long as you have a good internet connection. Lag and framerate drops are virtually nonexistent, and you don’t need the newest smartphone model to have a smooth experience. There are premium items, like intricately designed guns and character skins, that you can purchase from the store.
Overall, Point Blank: Strike is a true mobile FPS that you need to get your hands on. Though it’s quite casual for veteran FPS players’ tastes, it can provide countless hours of gunpowder-filled fun and entertainment.
